Germany’s Prime Minister Angela Merkel is sending conciliatory signals to Russia. In an interview with an East German newspaper Chancellor Merkel calls Russia a close partner. She stressed that good relations with Russia are Europe’s interest.
“For us Germans, Russia is a close partner. Between Germans and Russians and between the EU and Russia, there are many good discussion formats”, Merkel said in an interview with the daily newspaper “Leipziger Volkszeitung” ahead of the European elections on Sunday. “A good relationship with Russia is in our own interest”, she adds.
Merkel – who was born in the former GDR and speaks fluent Russian – emphasizes that she talks regularly with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the crisis in Ukraine and does not rule out a meeting in the nearest future”. There are the needs regarding to the current situation that determines when our next talks will take place, either by telephone or in a personal meeting.
In recent years, Germany has aimed “to bring Russia and Europe closer together”, said Merkel. “The Russian president himself sometimes speaks of an economic zone that stretches from Lisbon to Vladivostok, for which there are certainly many good arguments”, underlines the German Chancellor.
