Presidents of Russia and Ukraine discussed steps that can lead to immediate ceasefire

Kremlin`s spokesman Dmitry Peskov could not confirm that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko have on Wednesday agreed a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine during a telephone conversation earlier that day. He confirmed, however, that the presidents discussed steps how to resolve the conflict. Peskov stressed that Russia is no official party in the conflict and therefor cannot make agreements on a ceasefire.

“Putin and Poroshenko actually discussed steps that could lead to a ceasefire between the militia and the Ukrainian armed forces. Russia cannot agree physically on a ceasefire because it is not a party to the conflict”, Peskov underlined.

Earlier on Wednesday the press service of the Ukrainian president reported after a phone call between Poroshenko and Putin that an immediate ceasefire in eastern Ukraine has been agreed.

President Putin is currently on an official visit to Mongolia.
